Change of guard at RBI: Urjit Patel's tenure begins
Mumbai, Sep 6 In a low-key affair, Urjit Patel has begun his innings as Reserve Bank's new Governor with a private off-media 'handover' ceremony today -- a marked departure from his predecessor Raghuram Rajan announcing big-bang reforms on his first day itself three years ago.
Traditionally, the handover of charge by the outgoing Governor to the new head of the central bank has been a public affair and had taken place in the past in front of media cameras and this was also the case when Rajan had taken over from his predecessor D Subbarao.
In contrast, Patel officially assumed charge with effect from September 4 -- a Sunday -- itself, which was made public by RBI through a statement a day later.
However, the 'handover' took place today, the first working day, because of 'Ganesh Chaturthi' holiday yesterday.
An RBI spokesperson said the photographs of the official ceremony of Patel assuming office would be released later in the day by the central bank.
There was no word on whether or when Patel would be talking to media about his priorities and plan of action as head of Mint Street.
After assuming office on September 4, 2013, Rajan had held a press conference lasting more than an hour during which he announced his detailed action plan.
Some commentators have already said that Patel 'quietly' assuming office could be a signal for the things to come at RBI, after the end of tenure for an outspoken Rajan at the helms, who was always vocal with his views on all issues -- economic, social and political -- and always pitched for greater communication on part of the central bank.
On his first day, Rajan had said he would emphasise on transparency and predictability. 'A central bank should never say 'Never'! But the public should have a clear framework as to where we are going, and understand how our policy actions fit into that framework.
Key to all this is communication, and I want to underscore communication with this statement on my first day in office,' Rajan had told mediapersons on the first day.

ReplyDeleteSaoirse Ronan opens up about working with Meryl Streep
Ryan Gosling described Saoirse Ronan as “the new Meryl Streep.” In Little Women, although it was only one scene, Ronan got to act opposite Meryl Streep. Saoirse and Meryl play Jo March and Aunt March, respectively. Greta Gerwig directed the film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel of the same name. She also wrote the screenplay.
Speaking with The Jakarta Post, Ronan opened up about meeting Meryl for the first time. “I met Meryl a few years ago with Stanley Tucci, who’s done many films with her. Stanley and I had done “The Lovely Bones” together and we were at an awards show. I was 15. “The Devil Wears Prada” had come out. I turned to Stanley, and I was, “Oh my God, I can’t believe Meryl’s here.” He said, “Come on, we’ll go meet her.”
Ronan continued. “So, I met her, and she was so lovely. She gave me the biggest hug. I was no one. I was just some random actress. I’d met her a couple of times since then, so I felt like I knew her a bit already. I’ve worked with Ann Roth, who’s the costume designer she works with a lot. I felt like she was welcoming me in.
Next, she spoke about her experience working with Meryl in Little Women. “We had one scene together in “Little Women, which I really liked. It was a standoff between the two of us. I remember going into it thinking, OK just put my own feelings aside about Meryl—I’m just going to be professional and get through the scene.I did it, then as we checked the gate on the last setup, suddenly, I was, oh my God, I got to work with Meryl Streep! I got so emotional, overwhelmed by the fact that I’d worked with a hero of all of us. I went up to her and thanked her.”
At this point, Ronan stated how Meryl did not let her image affect her work. “There was nothing she said, in particular, that was a word of advice, which is a real testament to her as an actor because she was coming in there as a fellow actor and wasn’t stepping onto the set with this idea of who everyone thought she was. She was an actor. That’s always the most inspiring thing for a young actor to see when someone who’s such a legend comes in and just wants to get to work.”
